The Beatles Methods of Development

Allusion:

Point: Celebrities must be ever vigilant as some fans are potentially violent.
Proof: They can be killed signing an album cover.

Analogy:

Point: The Beatles breaking up was much like the divorce of a family.
Proof: One because it was long and drawn out. The second was because it was incredibly painful for the band. Also each member could be like a member of a family. John and Paul were the mother and father, they both really loved each other but they had to go their separate ways because they wanted different things. Ringo was the young child who was upset and didn't know what to do. George was the teenager who was somewhat relieved that he now had more freedom.

Point: The Composition of the song yesterday was very mysterious.
Proof: The melody came to Paul McCartney in a dream and he searched for months thinking he had copied it from somewhere else. When he couldn't find an original he claimed it for his own and published the most covered song of all time.

Contrast:

Point: John and Paul had very different styles and attitudes.
Proof: Paul was more pop catchy tunes. John liked more hard rock and experimental music. Because of this Paul wrote the hits and john wrote the more deep influential records.

Comparison:

Logical:

Point: Paul and john were very different.
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/thumb/5/50/Sgt._Pepper's_Lonely_Hearts_Club_Band.jpg/220px-Sgt._Pepper's_Lonely_Hearts_Club_Band.jpgProof: John willing did drugs while Paul held out till the later years, where he still tried to keep his drug use to a minimum.

Imaginative:

Point: Sgt Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band is like an adventure.
Proof: There are so many different sights on it and for many at the time it was life changing.

Classification:

Point: Rubber soul, Revolver and Sgt Peppers are classified as the Beatles most influential albums.
Proof: Songs like a day in the life, Tomorrow Never Knows and Norwegian Wood revolutionized the music industry with rising chord progression, Backwards Guitars and Indian instruments.

Cause and Effect:

Point: Creating a band identity can make your band more popular and recognizable
Proof: The Beatles all got the same haircut and it became an icon for Beatles recognition

Definition:

Point: The Beatles are so huge that they are in the dictionary itself
Proof: Beatles - a pop and rock group from Liverpool consisting of George Harrison, John Lennon, Paul McCartney, and Ringo Starr. Remembered for the quality and stylistic diversity of their songs (mostly written by Lennon and McCartney), they achieved success with their first single ‘Love Me Do’ (1962) and went on to produce albums such as Sergeant Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band (1967).
From the Oxford English Dictionary

Division:

Point: A band like The Beatles needs all the members to be there for them to perform

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/thumb/1/16/Revolver.jpg/220px-Revolver.jpgSpecific Example:

Point: The Beatles are the most successful band of all time
Proof: They have won 7 Grammy Awards

References:

Historical Reference:

Point: Many great bands have modest beginnings
Proof: The Beatles formed from a group of Quarry Bank School boys in Liverpool in the year 1960

Cultural Reference:

Point: The Beatles have been very influential in many ways
Proof: Fans and critics believe that the band embodies the era’s sociocultural revolution

Literary References:

Point: The Beatles aren’t afraid to share their experiences with their fans.
Proof: George Harrison wrote “The Beatles Anthology” and published it as a tell all book about The Beatles and their experiences.

Process Analysis:

Point: John Lennon and Paul McCartney are very collaborative when it comes to writing songs for the band

Proof: John and Paul really worked together to write the song ‘I Want to Hold Your Hand’. First, they sat across from each other at a table and wrote the lyrics. Next they played on a piano together at the same time until they found the chord and notes that they thought would work for the song. Finally, they write the notes down, put them with the lyrics they wrote, and then gave it to the band to play.

Harrison Bergeron vs. The Giver

Harrison Bergeron receiving his
handicaps
Book cover for The Giver

The short story 'Harrison Bergeron', written by Kurt Vonnegurt Jr.and the novel 'The Giver' by Lois Lowry both share a theme of forced equality, and how foolish and difficult it is to manage. In both texts, the government is forcing equality onto the citizens because the see it as an ideal society. In the short story Harrison Bergeron, the government enforces their idea of equality by physically and mentally handicapping citizens. The goal of total equality is a goal that the government there has striven to achieve for a long time. “The year was 2081, and everybody was finally equal… to the unceasing vigilance of agents of the United States Handicapper General.” The citizens from The Giver find themselves in parallel circumstances. The citizens were genetically modified and drugged so that they all became extremely similar. The citizens were naïve as to exactly what was happening. The citizens only knew: “The life without colour, pain or past.” The two stories show that when someone breaks the binds of forced equality, they can rebel, and possibly encourage others to do so. The character Harrison Bergeron realizes his true unhindered potential and tries to share it with the world. He became engrossed with his newfound power, and encouraged others to do the same. “Even as I stand here crippled, hobbled, sickened – I am a greater ruler than any man who ever lived!” Jonas, the protagonist from The Giver, also feels that way. He learns of the true experiences this world has to offer, and becomes infatuated. Jonas rebels from the bland and uninspiring society. He pities the citizens left behind. “They were satisfied with their lives which had none of the vibrance his own was taking on. And he was angry at himself, that he could not change that for them.” In both of the tales, society is forced into a state of complete uniformity, where nothing new is discovered or gained. That is not a way to successfully run a society to excel into the future. People must be able to reach their full potential to best contribute to society.

This is a trailer for the movie based on the story of Harrison Bergeron. It somewhat effectively summarizes the story, and clearly states the message and theme.

The Giver: Jonas's world is perfect. Everything is under control. There is no war or fear or pain. There are no choices Every person is assigned a role in the Community. When Jonas turns twelve he is singled out to receive special training from The Giver. The Giver alone holds the memories of the true pain and pleasure of life. Now it's time for Jonas to receive the truth. There is no turning back.

Dramatizing the Boring

This is a video that I found recently that I find hilarious and very interesting at the same time. A fan of Spongebob Squarepants made a video after making a bet with his friend that he could make anything seem dramatic. This video is definitive proof to his claim. The creator of the video puts the music and atmosphere of Inception over top of clips from the Spongebob movie. The video also has some elements borrowed from the Batman Rises trailer. The Purpose

This blog was created for my Grade 10 English ISU assignment. For the next semester (and maybe longer) I will be upkeeping this blog with content relating to my English course. It might not be the most exciting thing in the world, but I'll try my best to throw in a few laughs now and then. For example, go feed my little fishies! But for now, I'm going, and take a look at a picture that I took from my vacation!
